If you’re still not familiar with him, you can see him in the lyrics of your favourite rapper. However, today we talk about Virgil’s most interesting yet weird project this year ‘The 50’.
Abloh's creative drive and knowledge of design extend beyond apparel. His interest in designing sneakers came long before he became big. Over the years we have seen him redesigning Nike’s best-selling silhouette. Although the idea of releasing 50 alternate colorways of the Nike Dunk seems a little confusing, here’s what we know about his latest concept.
"The Lot Dunks"
It all started in the middle of this year when a few leaked pictures of Virgil’s ‘The 50’ capsule surfaced on the internet. It did not take long for the news to be one of the hottest topics. Soon Nike and Abloh confirmed the release of the entire pack via the SNKRS app. With a grey and white foundation, numbers 2–49 are the most similar to one another. The only change between each dunk is the material, color of the off-white tab, and bungee strap. One of the details which are sure to catch the attention of collectors is the numbering on each sneaker which can be located on the outside midsole.
Even though 48 of the 50 have identical looks, at first sight, two silhouettes stand out. The number 1 and 50 is the real deal. Both the dunks in the collection are unlike the others. Both the sneakers feature a shiny silver swoosh, 1/50 being all white with an intentionally aged sole and 50/50 being all black.
What is your pick?

Now, this brings us to a much more important subject. Why 50 dunks? What’s the idea behind it? Publicly, Virgil never spoke about his ideas or concepts for 50 dunks, however, months before the release he mentioned it via an Instagram post which gives us a small idea of the project. According to an article by laced, ‘Rumours have surfaced that the idea behind ‘the 50’ releases is that they will be regional, meaning the different colorways across Dunks 2 to 49 represent a City across the globe’.
The collaboration between Virgil and Nike is rare and one of a kind. Although some might consider it lame, collectors keep an eye for such drops. Just like every Nike X Off-White drop the resale prices of these dunks are astronomical. What are your thoughts on Virgil’s ‘The 50’ collection? Would you cop or drop? Let us know!
