Five must know Sneaker terms for every Sneakerhead

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

In today’s day and age, everyone calls themselves a sneakerhead. Well, let’s put your knowledge to the test. Do you think you have what it’s got to pass the ‘Sneakerhead test’? Read the five terms below and if you know them all you’re a certified OG.

#1: Bots

Ever cursed your luck for not being able to get your hands on a pair of sneakers online? I’m sure you’ve wondered how sneaker resellers always get lucky? Well, cut yourself some slack. If this makes you feel any better, your luck is as important as the ‘g’ in lasagna.

Bots are your enemy here! They are paid software programs that instantly add the latest sneaker release to your online cart within seconds. Resellers purchase subscriptions to these bots and thus end up with multiple pairs of the release.

Are they illegal? Unfortunately not. Controversial? Very much.

So next time you feel bad about missing out on landing a pair of your desired sneakers, remember you're competing against a few heartless lines of code :)

#2: Deadstock

“Deadstock is new old stock”

Confused? Well, you’re not alone.

Let me break it down for you.

When a sneaker has never been worn or tried on and is in brand-new condition it is known as a deadstock pair. But wait, there’s a catch.

Not only do the above conditions have to be met but also the sneakers should not be available for purchase from direct retailers.

You’d be lucky to get your hands on one of these hyped sneakers.

#3: Colourway

The cardinal rule of answering the esteemed question “What shoe are you wearing?’’, is to first mention the model followed by the sneaker colourway. Those who don’t agree can fight me!

“I’m wearing Jordan 1 Dark Mocha’s” or “These are my new Yeezy 350 in ‘Slate’’

Wonder what ‘Dark Mocha’ or ‘Slate’ mean? They are the colourway of the particular sneakers. This signifies a combination of colours used for a given sneaker model. It helps differentiate the sneaker from other releases of the same model. Some iconic colourways that you’ve definitively come across are the ‘Bred’ and ‘Chicago’.

#4: Beater

Through thick and thin, your beaters have seen it all.

In a myriad full of sneakers, they’re your go-to, your comfort pair. The one pair you can’t get tired of wearing and the first to come to your mind for everyday use.

Beaters sneakers have lived a life of their own and your journey through it all has given them their character. You’re not afraid to get them dirty and worn out. A few scuffs and scratches? Don’t worry, they don't mind it.

#5: Grail

The best of the best. Your crème de la crème sneaker. The one pair you just can't get out of your mind and makes your pupils dilate in a single sight. An obsession in its rawest sense. That is your ‘Grail’.

It is often extremely rare and limited in supply. And let’s not even get to the price of these because most Grails can cost an arm and a leg.

Trust me guys, it’s not worth it. That pair isn't going to fix you :(
